Gener8 Sentinel: How to check if your data has been breached
What are data breaches?
📖 data breach
- A data breach is a security violation, in which sensitive, protected, or confidential data is copied, transmitted, viewed, stolen, or used by an individual unauthorised to do so.
Anyone can be at risk from a data breach, from individuals to high-level organisations. They typically occur when a cybercriminal hacks an online database containing confidential information, but they can happen accidentally too. Either way, it can give criminals the potential to access your personal data to use for their own benefit. Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the majority of us moved our lives online. Homeworking, home-schooling, online shopping – we transitioned our lives over to the digital world almost overnight, and as a consequence, data breaches soared.
Are ‘Cookies’ part of the problem?🍪
The use of cookies on web pages allows companies to track you, harvest your data, and create an in-depth profile of you, containing everything from your personal information to how you behave online.
These profiles created by advertisers and data brokers can pose a data security threat. They contain detailed and sensitive data that can include; information about your race, political beliefs, gender, health, sexual orientation and more. Your profile and information can be traded and if they get into the hands of the wrong people, they can be used for malicious purposes (sometimes they’re published online or traded on the dark web 😟 ).
